About
Hotel Esencia is a majestic 50-acre estate at the midpoint between Tulum and Playa del Carmen in Mexico. It has long enjoyed a storied past in this ancestral cradle of culture, cuisine, and comfort. Originally built as the private hideaway home of an Italian duchess on the most beautiful beach of the Mayan Riviera, it later became a hotel, and, for some time, has been a sought after destination for honeymooners seduced by the serene comforts of this timeless mansion. The Main House remains the hotel’s centerpiece, around which footpaths lead to only 38 suites and 3 villas where guests enjoy genuine privacy and top flight hospitality. Ideally situated far from huge resorts and the roar of pleasure boats, the immaculate bay of Xpu-Ha is a natural haven where each year sea turtles make their nests. Hotel Esencia invites the happy few who know how rare it is to find a place that is truly unique, to make it their home in the tropics. Eleven new suites make their debut this season offering the ultimate “barefoot in the sand” experience imagined to satisfy the most discerning traveller.

Concept
A new chapter began in 2014 with the arrival of a new owner and a bold, worldly outlook on how to savor paradise. The estate’s provenance as a place of leisure for nobility is the guiding inspiration for a modern reimagining. While preserving the many qualities of the hotel, over the coming year its every detail is being redefined and reinvigorated. The strong architectural features of the hotel are reinforced by an entire collection of furniture designed especially for the hotel, as well as hand-woven rugs, bed throw and table tops. All are subtly paying a homage to mid century design and art in Mexico and more generally places of leisure from California to the French Riviera to Acapulco.
A particular attention is given to food and beverage with the arrival of a new executive chef and the development of a new beach bar. Alongside with the epicurean preoccupation come a new spa and Technogym fitness program with pilates reformers and a cold-pressed juice bar. Artworks by seminal 20th century artists; mid-century modern furniture and a curated collection of art and design books adorn guest rooms and the hotel salons. All the while, public spaces are subtly filled with a music play list conceived by celebrated sound designer Michel Gaubert. A fresh visual identity and a new website realized with the beautiful animations of none other than Pierre Le Tan.

Every room at Hotel Esencia by any other standard would be called a suite. The private terrace and sitting area of the rooms offer a peaceful view on the trees canopy or an impressive panorama of the Caribbean.

JUNGLE SUITE WITH BATHTUB
As close to the beach as possible without facing the beach itself, these quiet, cooling sanctuaries encircle the estate’s tropical gardens. Available with one king or two queen beds, these spacious suites have a large private outdoor dining terrace with sofa and feature extra large all-white bathrooms with double showers, double sinks, an in-room double bathtub, walk-in closets, wide-screen smart TVs, bluetooth speakers that connect to iPhones and other digital accessories, air conditioning, and all of Hotel Esencia’s signature amenities.
Some Jungle Suites with Bathtub are in their own stand-alone buildings, available with one king bed plus an optional rollaway (sleeps up to 2 adults /1 child).
Others are equally spacious but configured differently, available with either one king bed or two queen beds (sleeps up to 2 adults/2 children).

A plunge pool, rain-like shower room, one king bed, and spacious outdoor dining terrace with sofa distinguish every Jungle Suite with Plunge Pool is uniquely equipped for calm and restoration.
Some suites feature an indoors plunge pool while in others it is featured outdoors within a terrace solarium. All suites in this category feature spacious bathrooms, walk-in closets, wide-screen smart TVs, and sound systems that are easy to connect to iPhones and other digital accessories.

ROOFTOP WELLNESS SUITE
Our most exciting new addition, these premiere suites are truly at the top of their category in every way. Within three minutes walking distance from the beach, these new duplex suites are on the top two floors of independent bungalow buildings. Featuring a private fitness studio comprised of the virtual personal trainer The Mirror, or a personal Peloton bicycle, or personal Technogym running machine upon request, all of them feature a personal Technogym weight set, yoga mats, and a steam room/shower with our own blend of essential oils aromatherapy. TRX suspension training equipment available upon request. One more level up is a spacious rooftop terrace with a private heated pool, solarium, and outdoor shower – immersed within the jungle canopy. All Rooftop Wellness Suites feature an extra large king bedroom with seating area, a large outdoor dining terrace with sofa, extremely spacious all-white master bathrooms with double showers, double sinks, and walk-in closets. These suites also include wide-screen WiFi connected televisions, air conditioning, bluetooth speakers that connect to iPhones and other digital accessories, and all of Hotel Esencia’s signature amenities. These suites are available to connect via an interior or exterior staircase to a Jungle Suite with Plunge Pool below on the ground floor.

Located in and near the Main House, the six Master Suites directly face the sea, offering lovely views of the grounds, our main pools, and the Caribbean. MASTER BEACH SUITE
Each of our two spectacular Master Beach Suites is designed with an eye toward maximum privacy, comfort, and independence. With windows on three sides, and extremely spacious bathrooms with love seats, these suites also include a private heated plunge pool.
The ground level Master Beach Suite features an outdoor plunge pool surrounded by a terrace with built-in seating, while the upper level suite features an extremely private heated plunge pool next to the double walk-in shower.
Our Master Beach Suites are available to connect to an Esencia Jungle Suite for families or friends traveling together who wish to have the entire top or entire bottom floor of the building to themselves for maximum privacy.

MASTER JUNGLE SUITE
Featuring the best qualities of our Jungle Suites, these new suites are elevated to the next level, more like luxurious apartments than suites.
With multiple indoor and outdoor seating areas, grand master bedrooms, spacious master bathrooms with double bathtubs and optional steam shower, these suites feature either a second bedroom or a separate living room or office space that can easily be transformed into an extra sleeping room, and a second full guest bathroom.
These centrally located jungle sanctuaries are just steps from the beach and also feature extra large plunge pools immersed in the thick luscious jungle foliage.

THE ESENCIA SUITE
The crown jewel of the original Main House building created by the first owner, an Italian Duchess, The Esencia Suite is our truest expression of space and comfort.
Featuring a master bedroom with ocean views, a domed living room, a light-drenched master bathroom with double bathtub and steam shower, a second full guest bathroom, a reading den (or second bedroom) immersed in the jungle with windows on three sides including more ocean views – and a Peloton bicycle – this grand suite offers the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living.
Its spacious corner terrace on the lower level faces the canopy of the jungle, and its glorious 80m2 rooftop terrace features full 360 degree views of Xpu-Ha beach and the jungle treetops, as well our largest rooftop plunge pool, a covered outdoor second living room, sun beds, and a space for al fresco entertaining, with capacity for up to 20 people.
For those who wish a Presidential Suite experience, The Esencia Suite was conceived to easily connect with one or two of our Master Suites, taking over the entire north wing of our Main House.

These Duplex 2-bedroom residences feature a master suite with 1 king bed, a bathroom suite with separate walk-in shower and bath tub, private outdoor terrace with seating area and hammock, and a second room with 2 queen beds and a bathroom with shower. The ground level features a large private heated swimming pool, outdoor terraces with seating and dining table, a spacious living-dining room, a guest bathroom, complete media room with wide-screen smart TV. With ceiling fans and air conditioning, sound systems that are easy to connect to iPhones and other digital accessories, Butler service and Hotel Esencia signature amenities.

PRIVATE VILLA
‘Yum-Ha’ is a majestic colonial-style Villa discreetly located on a lush 15 acre property right next to Hotel Esencia. The 3-bedroom Villa is just a 3 minute walk from the beach and can accommodate up to 6 people. The Main House features ensuite bathrooms and private terraces overlooking the garden, a Mexican style kitchen, living room, dining room, and a terrace with outdoor dining area.
Villa Yum-Ha features a large swimming pool and comes with a private butler and house keeping services.

PRESIDENTIAL BUNGALOW
Our most private suite, this Caribbean style beach front bungalow – on its own 2,800m2 independent property – features all the comforts and signature amenities of Hotel Esencia. This exceptional suite under a large palapa roof features a master king bedroom overlooking the sea, an adjacent living area convertible to a second bedroom, a spacious master bathroom suite with double sinks, bathtub and shower, a large walk-in closet, a guest bathroom with shower, and a large wrap-around outdoor terrace with unobstructed views of the paradisiac Xpu-Ha beach.
This breathtaking suite includes 40m of private beachfront, with sunbeds and a large beach palapa for lounging or beachfront private dining. With wide-screen WiFi-connected smart TV, sound system, ceiling fans and air conditioning, butler service, and all Hotel Esencia amenities.

Restaurants

Dining at Hotel Esencia is at once a culinary voyage and a coming home. Meals are simple yet sophisticated, drawing as much from Mexico’s eclectic range of regional cuisines as from the well-loved comforts of Mediterranean cooking. What is not taken from Hotel Esencia’s own garden is sourced locally from farmers and artisans in Quintana Roo, or further afield from the places in Mexico known for exemplary delicacies—moles from Oaxaca, fruits from Yucatán, and wines from Baja.

The Beach Restaurant premieres this season: a multi-cultural gastronomic experience under a towering beachfront ‘palapa’ with spectacular 180 degree views. This new destination restaurant will be overseen by one of the world’s most exciting and influential chefs, Dimitris Katrivesis, who will bring a tropical peruvian style of cooking featuring a clever fusion of Peruvian and Japanese flavors together with the best ingredients of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula.

Situated between the pools and the beach, The Pool Restaurant is a picturesque spot to start one’s day. With an emphasis on seasonal ingredients and apt updates to coastal staples from Latin America and around the world, the menu is an ode to the south.

Located in the heart of the palm garden, The Garden Restaurant offers a refined take on Mexican cuisine from the Yucatán and beyond. While the décor and service might remind guests of an old world resort, the creative menus offer fresh approaches to tradition.

Beefbar Esencia
The international reference for all meat lovers, established in Monaco in 2005, has found a new home in the heart of our luscious Palm Garden.

Beefbar Esencia – is a true epicurean experience thanks to a menu based on simplicity, the finest high-quality ingredients, and a selection of exceptional meat cuts from Australian Black Onyx and Wx Wagyu beef, and Certified Japanese Kobe beef. Simple, comfort food delicacies prepared to order in our open kitchen and brick oven.

Mistura
A refined and authentic Mexican gastronomic experience under a towering beachfront ‘palapa’ with spectacular 180 degree views. Offering a creative selection of seafood dishes and specialties from the grill, with the best ingredients of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula and beyond. This sea-to-table experience now features a roaring new open fire grill.

Café Esencia

An addition to Café Esencia, our Coffee Bar offers coffee lovers a wide selection of coffee beans from different regions in Mexico as well as renowned international brands. All coffee beverages are prepared with freshly ground beans and brewed on demand. A selection of mouth-watering house made Mexican pastries are also on display. Our Juice Bar, offers a delicious selection of freshly squeezed juices, smoothies made to order, and our popular superfood bowls.

Spa and Healthclub

At the east end of the gardens is Hotel Esencia’s new health club overlooking the estate’s cenote. Housed under traditional palapa roofs, the fitness room, juice bar and spa integrate hallmarks of modern wellbeing with ancient customs of cultivating beauty, balance, and peace. The spa begins with a state-of-the art laboratory where therapists tailor bespoke, restorative programs. Taking advantage of the hotel’s Edenic location, the purest ingredients harvested from the waters of the Caribbean and the soil of surrounding Mayan jungles are the basis of every treatment. Situated squarely between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, Mayan Pyramids, underground cenotes and some of the Riviera’s best nightclubs, all are only 20 minutes away. For an adventure only steps off the hotel’s beach, there is a reef sanctuary for sea turtles and colorful exotic fish – one of the region’s best kept secrets.
