Together with Emilio Heredia, owner of the existing Papaya Playa Beach Resort, Design Hotels™ has created a destination in paradise along the Caribbean coast of Tulum, Mexico. Dotted along the beach and nestled in the jungle, the simplicity of the 89 rooms is what lends them their special charm. The resort’s restaurant overlooks the azure waters, where diners can enjoy locally sourced specialties; along the beach, drinks and snacks are served from late morning until late evening at the resort’s Beach Club. In addition to massages and beauty treatments, guests can also enjoy yoga, tai chi and meditation to complete the holistic circle. Being linked to the best DJs in the world, Papaya Playa makes music a key component of the experience. The design of the hotel evokes the traditional Mayan way of building. Papaya Playa Project adopted “Chukum,” a technique used by the Maya to cool the interiors of buildings made principally with the resin of a tree with the same name.

This is used on the palapas, as well as on the interiors as an insulation system. Our architecture is always functional and simple, using local traditions and wisdom, allowing Guests to interact more with Nature as the principal. The interiors are all designed with local traditional materials and textiles use by the Mexican natives from different regions.

It’s service space is distributed around the club to include a double-decker bar that advances toward the ocean, overhanging the beach; multilevel semi-amphitheatre with private seating enclaves with the infinity view ahead and above; two spacious oceanfront palapas; a 360° wooden tower rising above the property offering a vantage-point private table area; and a generous stretch of beach appointed with serviceable sun beds and shaded hanging beds palapitas.

Menu
The menu is based on the recipes largely influenced by the Mayan and Mexican traditions with a touch of experimentation.
